City of Lino Lakes
Park Board Referendum Meeting
November 19, 1997
• Remind voters to vote
• Select and use "tools"
LAST FIVE WEEKS: Big push time
Start meeting and working with groups, get OK from council, vote .
Paul Hokeness gave background on his referendum in Prior Lake .
Some of his points were :
• He said to have something for everyone .
• Make a list of what you want included in referendum.
• Make sure you have fun times when working on the project .
• When meeting with organizations - have a form made up that
they only need to fill in organization name, sign stating they
support a referendum, and can return to the Parks and
Recreation Department . This creates a phone bank.
• Two weeks before and two days before the vote call and thank
supporters and remind them to get out to vote .
• They had customized flyers made up.
Comments made by Jeff, Jon, or Paul :
Window of opportunity is passing by Lino Lakes land is being
sold.
Have a sense of where you are going.
Discuss this at a meeting so all Park Board members and staff
have the same answers .
Keep council neutral even if they support referendum because they
have too many negative followers .
20-250 of the people in the community will vote no on anything -
even if it is for a blue sky! Don' t waste your time on the non-
supporters, you will never get them to change their vote.
The ones that need it the most is who you work hardest on, so you
get them out to vote "Yes" .
,.N Tell people it is a close vote and you need them to get out and
vote.
4
