Lino Lakes Parks and Recreation Department
i 7204 Lake Drive
C i T 1( O F Lino Lakes, MN 55014
I KE (612) 780-1885 Fax (612) 784-7227
IINC)LA
TO: Park Board Members
FROM: Rick DeGardner, Parks and Recreation Director
SUBJECT: Birchwood Acres—Installation of Climbing Equipment
The Friends of the Park have donated a Jacobs Ladder climbing apparatus and picnic table for
Birchwood Acres Park. There have been some concern from area residents who live adjacent to
the park regarding the addition of the Jacobs Ladder.
Some residents have expressed concerns about installing additional play equipment. One
resident stated, "the neighborhood worked very hard in developing this park to the extent that it
currently is, and it is not reasonable to add additional equipment." There was also concern
regarding the color of the Jacobs Ladder.
If it is acceptable to add this piece of equipment, I would recommend extending the existing play
area to the south. This would require the removal of 10— 12 Quaking Aspen Trees,
approximately 1"-2 t/2" in diameter. This species of tree is not considered a quality species. The
removal of the trees would not diminish the natural beauty of this park, impact the visual
experience of the park area, and there is adequate trees and brush surrounding this area.
The Jacobs Ladder consists of a yellow middle post with two of the climbing bars blue and the
remaining two bars green. In discussions with the equipment vendor it is not feasible to paint
this equipment.
It is my recommendation to install the Jacobs Ladder climber by extending to the south the
existing play area. This piece of equipment would compliment the existing play equipment,
would not visually impact adjacent residents, and would not impact the scenic beauty of this
park.
sw/parkbrdBirchwood Acres—Installation of Climbing Equipment.doc
