As for the Public Works department, the weather has not been kind. Staff has
been busy sanding and salting for icing conditions, and this last big snowfall had
them out with the plows starting at 3 AM.
We promoted a staff member to Water Utility supervisor this year, and approved a
plan to begin replacement of aging water meters with electronic metering devices.
This project is a good one to highlight because it also was the first to establish a
new level of fiscal responsibility, by developing a cost-benefit analysis similar to
what will be required on all future projects in the city.
One big future project for this department is coordination with Anoka County in
the development of the Master Plan for the Regional Park Reserve. The Reserve
effectively divides our city in two, and takes up 50% of our land mass. It will
remain 80% undeveloped -just as you see it today. Of the remaining 20%, 12%
will occur in the existing developed areas, and the remaining 8% will be
developed as trails throughout the park.
The County continues to work closely with the city to establish connections
between the city and county parks. Thanks to the efforts of the 2020 Vision Parks
and Recreation group, the County moved an east-west corridor through the park to
the top of the county's project list. The County , John VonDeLinde, obtained $1.6
million in grant money from the State to complete that corridor over the next year.
We expect that the connection from Town Center into the park will also happen as
a result of that grant.
9
