South Athletic Complex Site <br /> City of Lino Lakes, Minnesota <br /> REGIONAL DESCRIPTION <br /> General Information <br /> The Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area is located in the <br /> southeast quadrant of the state of Minnesota near the confluence <br /> of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. It is approximately 250 <br /> miles south of Canada and 150 miles north of Iowa. The average <br /> elevation of the area is 900 feet above sea level. <br /> The "Twin Cities" is one of the largest commercial/urban <br /> centers in .the Midwest. Its Standard 'Metropolitan Statistical <br /> Area (SMSA) has been made up of ten counties including: Anoka, <br /> Carver, Chisago, Dakota, .Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, Washington, and <br /> Wright Counties in Minnesota and St. Croix. County in Wisconsin. <br /> The Bureau of the Census recently announced that the SMSA is <br /> being expanded to include Sherburne County and parts of Stearns <br /> County in Minnesota and portions of two additional counties in <br /> Wisconsin. This is indicative of the general trend to growth and <br /> expansion in this market area. <br /> The central business districts of Minneapolis and St. Paul <br /> are approximately 10 miles apart and share a common international <br /> airport. Each city maintains its own identity and economic base <br /> although much of their business and industry is interrelated. <br /> The Twin Cities are the major commercial, industrial and <br /> financial center in the upper Midwest. Its trade area extends to <br /> western Wisconsin, Iowa, upper Michigan and the Dakotas. There <br /> Page 7 <br />
