MUNICIPAL CANVASSING BOARD <br />AGENDA ITEM 1 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />STAFF ORIGINATOR: Julie Bartell, City Clerk <br /> <br />MEETING DATE: February 18, 2020 <br /> <br />TOPIC: Canvass Election <br /> <br />VOTE REQUIRED: Simple Majority <br /> <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />Minnesota Statutes, Section 205.185, requires that the governing body of a city conducting an <br />election must canvass the returns and declare the results within seven days, under the following <br />guidelines: <br /> <br />- The clerk prepares a canvassing report (abstract) to accumulate results from multiple <br />precincts; <br />- The canvass board publically canvasses the election returns by reviewing the abstract and <br />write in reports; <br />- The board may ask to examine summary statements before it declares the results; <br />- When satisfied that the abstract reports are correct, the board signs the abstracts and they <br />become the official results; <br />- In the case of a tie vote, the canvassing board determines the winner by lot. <br /> <br />If the canvass board approves the results, the seven day contest period begins, after which the <br />election results are final and an election certificate is issued. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br /> <br />That the city council act as Canvassing Board and accept the results as presented. <br /> <br />ATTACHMENTS <br /> <br />Returns of February 11, 2020 Special Election
