2 <br /> <br />3. Setbacks for hives <br />a. 25 feet from rear and side property lines <br />i. Provides safe distance for bees to establish flight patterns <br />ii. Typical lot width is 80 feet which provides flexibility in locating <br />hives from side lot lines <br />iii. Typical lot depth is 135 feet which provides flexibility in locating <br />hives from rear lot lines <br />b. Hives shall be allowed in rear yards only unless zoned R or R-X <br />c. Should special consideration be given for rear yards that abut protected <br />open space/conservation areas? <br />4. Colony Density <br />a. Standard R-1 Single Family lot size is 10,800 s.f. = ¼ acre <br />b. 2 hives are manageable for a hobby bee keeper on smaller residential lots <br />i. 2 hives or colonies per 0 to ½ acre <br />ii. 4 hives or colonies per ½ acre to 1 acre <br />iii. 6 hives or colonies per 1 acre to 5 acre <br />iv. Unlimited hives or colonies greater than 5 acres <br />5. Water source shall be provided <br />6. Written neighbor consent shall be provided by 100% of abutting property owners <br />7. Educational requirement for hobby bee keeper shall be required <br />8. City license/permit application and fee shall be required <br /> <br />This list is not intended to be all inclusive but rather a starting point for conversation. <br /> <br />Requested Council Direction <br /> <br />If Council wishes to further the conservation of amending the ordinance, staff <br />recommends sending the issue to the Planning & Zoning Board for public hearing and <br />comment. The Planning & Zoning Board will make recommendation to City Council for <br />the final decision. <br /> <br />Attachments <br /> <br />None.
