CITY COUNCIL <br />AGENDA ITEM 5A <br />STAFF ORIGINATOR: Diane Hankee PE, City Engineer <br />MEETING DATE: February 14, 2022 <br />TOPIC: Consider Resolution No. 22-24, Accepting bids, Awarding a <br />Construction Contract, Water Tower No. 2 Rehabilitation Project <br />VOTE REQUIRED: 3/5 <br />INTRODUCTION <br />Staff is requesting council's consideration to accept bids and award a construction contract for <br />the Water Tower No. 2 Rehabilitation Project. <br />BACKGROUND <br />On January 10, 2022, the City Council ordered the project and authorized the ad for bid for the <br />Water Tower No. 2 Rehabilitation Project located at 7001 Otter Lake Road. This tower was <br />constructed in 1996. The water tower inspection report identified several structural and coating <br />issues that need to be addressed. In addition, the exterior and interior dry coatings are over 24 <br />years old and have surpassed their life expectancy. Coatings on water towers are typically <br />replaced every 20 years, or more frequently to protect the underlying steel surfaces from <br />corrosion. <br />This is a 14-16 week project. The tower will be taken out service for a period of time while they <br />work on the inside of the bowl. The completion date for this project is fall of 2022. <br />Bids were received on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. A total of 3 bids were received and are <br />summarized below: <br />CONTRACTOR <br />TOTAL BASE <br />BID <br />Classic Protective Coatings, Inc <br />$1,188,857.80 <br />Viking Industrial Painting <br />$1,428,600.00 <br />TMI Coatings, Inc. <br />$1,637,000.00 <br />The low bid was submitted by Classic Protective Coatings, Inc. in the amount of <br />$1,188,857.00. The engineer's estimate was $1,536,000. Funding for the project is through the <br />Water Operating Fund. <br />
