CITY COUNCIL <br />AGENDA ITEM 3E <br />STAFF ORIGINATOR: John Swenson, Public Safety Director <br />MEETING DATE: August 8, 2022 <br />TOPIC: Appointment of Police Sergeant <br />VOTE REQUIRED: 3/5 <br />INTRODUCTION <br />The Council is being asked to approve the appointment of Matt Carlson for the vacant Police <br />Sergeant position in the Public Safety Department. <br />BACKGROUND <br />Police Sergeant Mike Rumpsa is retiring, effective August 16, 2022, creating a vacancy in one of <br />our Sergeant positions. At this time, staff has completed an internal recruitment process and is <br />recommending the approval of Mr. Matt Carlson for the Police Sergeant position. <br />Mr. Carlson holds a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and has been with the Lino Lakes <br />Police Department for two years. Mr. Carlson currently works as a Police Officer and has <br />performed in additional roles within the department such as Police Training Officer, Wellness <br />Committee Member, DNR Firearm Safety instructor, Use of Force and Firearms Instructor. <br />The hourly rate of pay would be $43.07, which is Step 2 of the union wage schedule. The union <br />wage schedule has nine steps. With the Council's approval, Mr. Carlson would start in the <br />position of Police Sergeant on August 21, 2022. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Approve the appointment of Matt Carlson for the Police Sergeant position. <br />
