WSB recently presented an abstract at the AWWA
International Symposium on Biological Treatment in
Austin, Texas. The St. Martin biological filtration plant
designed by WSB is the first fully biological filtration
plant in Minnesota. This plant successfully removes
high concentrations of iron, manganese, and ammonia
while saving the City chemical and operational costs.
WSB owns and operates an advanced biological
filtration pilot plant that was recently used to
successfully pilot biological filtration for a central
Minnesota community of about 8,000 people, and
another community of about 13,000 people in
southern Minnesota. In addition, we recently piloted
biological filtration to remove high concentrations of
nitrate for a Twin Cities community and achieved 100
percent removal of nitrate in their raw water.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently
preparing a chapter on biological filtration for an
upcoming AWWA manual and will be using the results
of these pilot studies in this manual because of the
excellent results achieved.
The filter run times achieved with biological filtration
are sometimes over five times longer than the filter run
times achieved at conventional water treatment plants
which could save the city many millions of gallons of
filter supply and backwash wastewater per year.
We estimated that the City of Lino Lakes could
potentially save approximately $1 million in chemical
costs over the next 20 years if biological filtration is
implemented for the Water Treatment Plant.
SCOPE OF WORK, FINAL DESIGN SERVICES
WSB will prepare final plans and specifications,
administer the bid process, and administer the
construction in accordance with the Project
Understanding section of this proposal.
A Proposal for Design, Bidding, and Construction Administration for a
Water Treatment Plant for City of Lino Lakes Project Understanding & Approach 8
