§ 1007.001 RULES AND DEFINITIONS. <br />(1) Rules. The language set forth in the text of this ordinance shall be interpreted in <br />accordance with the following rules of construction: <br />(a) The singular number includes the plural, and the plural the singular. <br />(b) The present tense includes the past and the future tenses, and the future the present. <br />(c) The words "shall" and "must" are mandatory while the word "may" is permissive. <br />(d) The masculine gender includes the feminine and neuter. <br />(e) Whenever a word or term defined hereinafter appears in the text of this ordinance, its <br />meaning shall be construed as set forth in such definition thereof, or its commonly used definition <br />by the Merriam -Webster dictionary. <br />(f) In the event of conflicting provisions, the more restrictive shall apply. <br />(g) All measured distances expressed in feet shall be to the nearest tenth of a foot. <br />(h) In their interpretation and application, the provisions of this ordinance shall be held <br />to be the minimum requirement for the promotion of health, safety, and welfare. <br />(2) Definitions. The following words and terms, wherever they occur in this ordinance, shall <br />be interpreted as herein defined: <br />ACCESSORYAPARTMENT. A secondary dwelling unit established in conjunction with and <br />clearly subordinate to a primary dwelling unit, whether a part of the same structure as the primary <br />dwelling unit or a detached dwelling unit on the same lot. <br />ACCESSORY BUILDING. A portion of the principal building or a detached structure on <br />the same lot which is used for an accessory use. <br />A CCESSOR Y STRUCTURE. A structure detached from a principal building located on the <br />same lot and customarily incidental and subordinate to the principal building or use. <br />ACCESSORY USE. A use of land or of a building or portion thereof customarily incidental <br />and subordinate to the principal use of the land or building and located on the same lot with such <br />principal use. <br />ADDITION. A physical enlargement of an existing structure. <br />ADJOINING/ABUTTING LOT OR LAND. A lot or parcel of land which shares all or part <br />of a common lot line with another lot or parcel of land. <br />ADULT USE RELATED TERMS. <br />2 <br />
