1
PLANNING & ZONING BOARD
AGENDA ITEM 8B
STAFF ORIGINATOR: Katie Larsen, City Planner
P & Z MEETING DATE: May 10, 2023
REQUEST: Text Amendment-Backyard Chickens
CASE NUMBER: N/A
APPLICANTS: City of Lino Lakes
OWNERS: Multiple
BACKGROUND
Planning and Zoning Board Vice Chair Root and Member Isaac Wipperfurth requested a
discussion item regarding backyard chickens be added to the agenda.
ANALYSIS
The current City zoning ordinance allows for farm animals such as chickens on rurally zoned
properties (R, Rural or R-X, Rural Executive). There are over 8,000 acres of rurally zoned
property in the City that allows for farm animals. Attached is the City’s zoning map.
As you know, the City adopted its new zoning ordinance on January 5, 2023. During the 24
month update process, there was no interest by the City Council to revise the zoning ordinance to
allow for chickens in other zoning districts.
Coincidently, there was a recent article in the Star Tribune regarding backyard chickens.
RECOMMENDATION
None. Discussion item only.
ATTACHMENTS
1. Zoning Map
2. Star Tribune May 1, 2023 Article
