1

CITY COUNCIL
WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
ITEM NO. 1

STAFF ORGINATOR: John Swenson, Public Safety Director

DATE OF WORK SESSION: September 11, 2023

TOPIC: Public Safety Vehicle Purchase
______________________________________________________________________________
BACKGROUND

During the discussion with Council regarding the purchase of public safety vehicles, Council has
directed staff to purchase white vehicles only. As directed, staff has followed this directive with
previous public safety vehicles purchases.

Vehicle 399 is currently the only unmarked patrol vehicle that is not white in color and this
vehicle was approved to be replaced in 2022. Staff anticipates that vehicle 399 will be sold later
this year when its replacement is built. This will result on no vehicles in the patrol fleet that are
not white in color.

To enhance our police staff’s ability to address traffic safety concerns, staff is requesting that
one of proposed public safety purchases be ordered in a color other than white. If Council
directs to purchase one public safety vehicle in a color other than white, it will be assigned to
patrol and built-out to facilitate traffic safety enforcement efforts.

There will be no additional costs to purchase a vehicle in a color other than white.

REQUESTED COUNCIL DIRECTION

Staff is requesting Council direction.

ATTACHMENTS
