ENVIRONMENTAL BOARD <br /> AGENDA ITEM 7A <br /> STAFF ORIGINATOR: Andy Nelson <br /> MEETING DATE: December 271h, 2023 <br /> REQUEST: Discussion only. <br /> TOPIC: 2023 Forestry Review <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> Forestry in 2023 was mainly focused on Emerald ash borer response and clearance pruning of <br /> boulevard trees. Droughts over the last several years have impacted trees throughout the City, <br /> increasing mortality of young trees and making field diagnoses of oak issues particularly <br /> challenging. <br /> Staff submitted an application for the Tree City program that included information about the <br /> City's forestry work for 2023. A summary of that data is included below. <br /> City trees planted: 73 <br /> Developer trees planted: 51 <br /> Total trees planted: 124 <br /> Trees sold at Tree Sale: 143 <br /> Ash trees removed: 66 <br /> Non-ash trees removed: 39 <br /> Total trees removed: 105 <br /> Trees pruned: 231 <br /> Ash trees injected: 69 <br /> In addition to seeking Tree City status, staff also submitted for a Growth Award for additional <br /> credentials achieved, continuing education for staff, tree inventory updates, tree planting, tree <br /> protection efforts, and natural resource restoration work. <br /> Staff will present more detail on forestry work performed in 2023 along with a brief overview of <br /> projects for 2024. <br /> ENVIRONMENTAL DIRECTION <br /> Discussion only. <br /> 1 <br />
