ENVIRONMENTAL BOARD
AGENDA ITEM 7B
STAFF ORIGINATOR: Andy Nelson
MEETING DATE: December 271h, 2023
REQUEST: Discussion only.
TOPIC: Drive for 75, Water Conservation Initiative
BACKGROUND
In 2022, Lino Lakes residents used approximately 80 gallons of water per person per day. On
average, Minnesota residents use 52 gallons per person per day. In an effort to conserve
freshwater resources, the City has initiated the Drive for 75 outreach campaign that kicked off
with an article in the winter newsletter. Drive for 75 sets a goal of 75 gallons per person per day,
a goal that should be quite achievable with some good community teamwork.
Staff is seeking feedback/brainstorming from the Environmental Board on options for
encouraging water conservation. As residents, what strategies or outreach methods might
encourage you to take an active role in conserving water?
Water Use Categories
Irrigation-based strategies:
• smart irrigation controllers
• smart watering practices (1 inch of water per week for lawns)
• irrigation system audits
• surface water reuse (rain barrels, ponds)
• alternative turf grass types
• drought-tolerant landscape plants
Indoor use strategies:
• EPA certified WaterSense products (showerheads, toilets, bathroom faucets)
• modifying behaviors (length of time in shower, running full loads of dishes and laundry)
ENVIRONMENTAL DIRECTION
Discussion only.
ATTACHMENTS
1.
