1 <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />REGULAR MEETING STAFF REPORT <br />AGENDA ITEM 3C <br />STAFF ORIGINATOR: Meg Sawyer, Human Resources and Communications Manager <br />MEETING DATE: May 13, 2024 <br />TOPIC: Consider Appointment of Public Works Streets Maintenance <br />Worker <br />VOTE REQUIRED: Simple Majority <br />______________________________________________________________________________ <br />INTRODUCTION <br />The City Council is being asked to approve the appointment of Derek Engstrom to the full-time <br />Streets Maintenance Worker position within the Public Works Department. <br />BACKGROUND <br />Staff has completed the recruitment process, provided a conditional offer, and is <br />recommending the approval of Engstrom for the full-time position. <br />Engstrom has an Associate’s Degree from Century College and is currently working as a <br />Hydrovac Operator at David’s Hydrovac in Columbus. <br />The starting wage for Engstrom will be $32.43 per hour, which is Step 3 in a 6 step wage scale <br />for the Maintenance Worker position. <br />With the Council’s approval, Engstrom would start in the Streets Maintenance Worker position <br />on May 15, 2024. <br />The hiring of Engstrom will backfill the Streets Maintenance Worker vacancy that was created <br />due to a retirement on December 1, 2023. The 2024 Adopted Budget includes five full-time <br />Streets Maintenance Worker positions. Approval of Engstrom in the Streets Maintenance <br />Worker position will not result in an increase to personnel costs. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Please approve the appointment of Derek Engstrom to the Streets Maintenance Worker <br />position. <br />ATTACHMENTS <br />None <br />64
