CITY COUNCIL <br />AGENDA ITEM 1 F <br /> <br /> <br />STAFF ORIGINATOR: Lisa Hogstad -Osterhues , Deputy Clerk <br /> <br />MEETING DATE: January 27 , 201 4 <br /> <br />TOPIC: Consider Approving Application for Exempt Permit f or a <br />Lawful Gambling License for a raffle by Knights of <br />Columbus #9905 at St. Joseph Cath olic Church <br /> <br />VOTE REQUIRED: 3/5 Vote <br /> <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />The Knights of Columbus #9905 has applied for an exempt permit to conduct a raffle for a <br />fundraiser benefit event . The ev ent is scheduled for March 15 , 201 4 . The proceeds from this <br />fundra ising event will be used towards the medical expenses of the family in need. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />Non -profit organizations are allowed, under the State Gambling Statutes, to apply for an <br />exempt ion from a gambling lic ense if they conduct five (5) or fewer gambling occasions per <br />calendar year. The Knights of Columbus #9905 conducts five (5) or less per calendar and, <br />therefore, remains exempt from requiring a gambling license. <br /> <br />Minnesota Statute s , Chapter 349, Section 349.166, Subd. 2 does, however, require that th e non - <br />profit organizations applying for the exemption permit , notify the city that they are applying for <br />the exemption and receive local approval . <br /> <br />The application and background materials are on file in City Clerkâs office . <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br /> <br />Adopt a moti on approving the application for exemption with no waiting period . <br />
