ordinance is not limited to residential districts but rather applies uniformly across the city. The
ordinance does allow for vehicles of this type to park for a two hour maximum if actively
loading, unloading or performing a service.
The gross vehicle weight rating (11,075 pounds) is consistent with our current zoning ordinance
requirements regarding off - street parking. The use of this specific threshold dates back to 1982
zoning ordinance revision. As an example the gross vehicle weight rating for a single rear wheel
Ford F -350 can approach 11,500 pounds. A dual wheel version of the same truck begins at
12,600. The council may wish, for the purposes of this ordinance, to adjust the figure to 12,000
pounds to make a clear distinction between single and dual rear wheel trucks. On- street parking
restrictions in other communities used gross vehicle weight thresholds that varied from 5,000 to
12,000 pounds.
Another area for council consideration is the proposed prohibition of on- street parking for
recreational equipment, motor homes and boats. Due to the similarities between these types of
vehicles, in terms of size, with other trucks and trailers they were incorporated into the ordinance
prohibitions. The council may find that recreational vehicles are more in keeping with the
residential character of the area and not subject to the prohibitions. Optional language has been
included in the draft ordinance for council consideration.
Council Direction
1. Does the Council want to consider establishment of on- street parking restrictions?
Attachments
1. Draft On- street Parking Ordinance Amendment
2
