Swenson
Public Safety Director /Chief of Police
DATE: August 8, 2011
TOPIC: Authorization to accept grant funding from Century
College
VOTES REQUIRED: Simple Majority
BACKGROUND
The Police Department has a long standing partnership with the Century College School of
Law Enforcement; from student interns, department members serving in an advisory
capacity to faculty and students, and training partnerships.
In 2005, Century College was awarded a grant through the National Science Foundation to
develop Investigative Science & Law Enforcement Technology (ISLET) course curriculum
and technology improvement in public safety sector. As part of this grant funding, Century
College has awarded the Lino Lakes Police Department a $33,381 grant for the purchase
of digital video recording systems for Lino Lakes Police Department (LLPD) squad cars. In
return for this equipment LLPD staff will work with Century College faculty to develop 20
training videos for use in course curriculum at Century College.
There is no requirement that LLPD financially match any portion of this grant. The LLPD
will be responsible for costs related to installation of the camera systems into patrol
vehicles. This cost will be covered with fund available in the Narcotics Forfeiture fund;
therefore, acquisition and installation of all equipment related to this grant will have a zero
general fund impact.
The video recording equipment will become the property of the City of Lino Lakes once
installed in police department patrol vehicles.
OPTIONS
1. Authorize acceptance of $33,081 grant from Century College for digital video
recording equipment.
2. Request further information from staff.
RECOMMENDATION
Option No. 1
P21
