•
•
WS — Item 3
WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
Work Session Item 3
Date: November 7, 2011
To: City Council
From: Michael Grochala
Re: Jason's Bobby & Steve's Auto World Access
Background
At the October 24, 2011 City Council meeting, Jason Snyder of Jason's Bobby & Steve's
Auto World commented on the difficulty of accessing his business as a result of the 35E
Interchange improvements. The City Council requested that the issue be placed on the
November work session agenda.
Auto World is located at the intersection of Main Street and 21st Avenue. Prior to the
reconstruction of Main Street in 2008, the intersection of Main & 21st Avenue allowed
for full ingress and egress movements. Access was partially restricted as part of the Main
Street reconstruction. The Main Street reconstruction limited access to right -in, right -out
and left -in movements due to proximity of the intersection to the freeway ramps and to
improve mobility along the corridor.
As design work continued for the interchange project, property owners and development
interests worked with the city and county to allow full access to properties both north and
south of Main Street. By separating the access points, allowing full access to the north at
21st Avenue and access to the south opposite the 35E southbound off ramps, we were able
to accommodate the access requests of the property owners while addressing the county's
traffic concerns. However, this design further reduced the southern access to 21st Avenue
to a right -in only condition.
While Auto World now has full access to a signalized intersection they have stated that
the access changes, coupled with the orientation of the existing building, have
significantly impacted business. As a result they are interested in pursuing any potential
access alternatives.
Requested Council Direction
Discussion only. No action required at this time.
Attachments
1. 21St Avenue Intersection Layout.
