•
•
•
AGENDA ITEM 3A
STAFF ORIGINATOR: Linda Waite Smith, City Administrator
DATE: 1/24/00
TOPIC: Consider Salary Increases for Fire Department Employees
VOTE REQUIRED: 3/5
BACKGROUND:
The Centennial Fire District Steering Committee meets quarterly to conduct business.
For lack of a quorum at the January meeting, the Committee was unable to take official
action on proposed salary increase for the Fire Chief and Fire Fighters. Therefore, the
three city councils are being asked to take formal action since the Steering Committee
won't reconvene until April.
The Fire Chief's performance appraisal was conducted by the three City Administrators
on January 19. On the basis of his performance and a review of salaries in comparable
metro area cities, the Administrators recommend a five per cent salary increase for 2000.
With the increase, the Chief's salary of $56,303 will still be below the 1999 metro
average which is $61,000.
Fire Fighters are ;,urreiitiy paid $7.00 per ho; r. Employees who have completed Fire
Fighter II (advanced) training are eligible for an additional $.75 per hour. Those who
have completed Emergency Medical Technician Training (EMT) are eligible for an
additional $.75 per hour. The maximum hourly rate an employee can receive is $8.50.
The Fire Chief has recommended, and the three city administrators concur, that Fire
Fighter pay for 2000 be increased to $7.50 per hour, with additional compensation of
$1.00 per hour for those with Fire Fighter II training and $1.00 per hour for those with
EMT certification. The proposed maximum hourly rate an employee could receive would
be $9.50 per hour.
These proposals are in line with salaries paid in comparable communities and they can be
funded within the Fire Department's 2000 operating budget.
Staff is requesting that the City Council approve both proposals.
