•
MEMORANDUM
October 16, 2000
to: City Council
from: Jeff Smyser
subject: Temporary Fabric Structures
cc: Dan Tesch, John Powell, Mary Kay Wyland, Pete Kluegel
Some of you may have seen a few temporary fabric structures around Lino Lakes. They
are made of a metal pole frame with fabric stretched over it. People are using these
structures for inexpensive storage of vehicles or other items. City staff have received
some calls about these structures regarding placement and size. Most people just put
them up without contacting us. In discussions with the Building Official, we decided it
would be a good idea to inform the City Council about how we are addressing these
structures.
These structures are not addressed in the building code. No building permit is required.
We have some concern about snow loading, but snow likely will slide off the fabric.
Citizens who put up such a structure do so at their own risk, however.
The placement of the structure and its size are two other issues. We will consider these
fabric structures as accessory structures. As such, they must: 1) meet setback
requirements for the zoning district, and; 2) the maximum accessory building square
footage for the lot size will apply.
The aesthetics of these structures may be questioned, but the City has no ordinance to
address that.
I provided this information to the P & Z at its meeting on October 11.
