Pecchia, Public Safety Director <br />Chief of Police <br />DATE <br />TOPIC <br />VOTES REQUIRED: <br />BACKGROUND <br />June 11, 2001 <br />Apply for the COPS in Schools Grant <br />Simple Majority <br />The Lino Lakes Police Department is requesting approval from the <br />City Council to apply for a "COPS in Schools Grant" to enter into <br />a partnership with the Centennial School District, specifically <br />in Rice Lake Elementary School. The school is located in the <br />City of Lino Lakes. The purpose of the grant is to work toward <br />making Rice Lake Elementary one of the safest schools in the <br />nation. Both parties agree to foster positive interaction <br />between school staff, police department employees and the <br />children we serve. The Community Policing Philosophy strategies <br />we hope to employ are: Training School Safety Patrol Crossing <br />Guards; School Security Program; Present lessons on respect, <br />responsibility, good decisions, and problem solving; Child <br />Protection Program; Implementation of the Forest Lake Area Youth <br />Service Bureau into Rice Lake Elementary; Attend various school <br />functions; Safety Camp; Traffic Safety Issues; Taking police <br />reports of crimes on school property; Public Relations with <br />students (eat lunch and attend recess with students); Promote <br />Responsible Behavior; Be a Positive Role Model; and Member of the <br />Lino Lakes Police Department Active Shooter Response Team. <br />The amount of the grant request is $125,000 over a three year <br />period. The grant would be funded by the formula as outlined in <br />the grant application. <br />OPTIONS <br />1. Approve request to submit application for the COPS in <br />School Grant. <br />2.
