Lake, thereby, making the ordinance
perpetual. As you know, the ordinance is scheduled to expire on September 1, 2004, unless the City
Council takes action to formally remove the repeal language.
The unique natural resources found within and surrounding the north half of Peltier Lake are deeply
valued by many stakeholders throughout the community and the greater region. Significant natural and
scenic features such as bald eagles, otters, great blue herons, snapping turtles, leopard frogs, great
egrets, wood ducks, wild turkeys, large -mouth bass, northern pike, emergent marshes and maple
basswood forests are just a' few of the highlights that can be experienced at the present time. Looking...
towards the future, a permanent No Wake Zone policy decision is clearly a prudent best management
practice in an effort to sustain the quality and character of the land, water, and wildlife resources for
tomorrow.
According to Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Anoka County officials, Peltier Island is
a 30 acre' island located on the north end of Peltier Lake and harbors the second largest heron colony in
the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area and also contains an active Bald Eagle nest The island itself and the
surrounding natural systems are biologically unique and contain rare plants and animals that are of local,
regional and statewide significance. This resource area is considered to be the highest quality natural
feature of the entire 3,100 acre Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park Reserve •
•
A Peltier Island Heron Rookery Task Force was assembled in early 2002, with representatives from the
City of Lino Lakes, City of Centerville, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (Conservation
FAX: 763-323-5682
Affirmative Action - 3 6 - )pportunity Employer TDDfrTY:.763- 323 -5289
