• <br />Anoka County Multi - Jurisdictional <br />All Hazards Mitigation Plan <br />Coon Rapids has an expectation of a tornado every year. The most recent significant event: <br />09/21/2005, possible F -2 tornado struck east edge of city and into Blaine. Another significant <br />tornado struck on 07/18/1986 on the east side of <br />the city, near Egret and University Avenue border <br />area from Mississippi River to Evergreen <br />Boulevard, near border with Fridley. Roofs taken <br />off, trees down, hail damaged, homes and <br />businesses destroyed or uninhabitable. The loss <br />impact of future occurrence: potential to be <br />devastating. <br />In 1965, a tornado devastated the city of Fridley, <br />Over 425 homes were destroyed, and 1224 <br />homes were extensively damaged resulting in <br />millions of dollars in losses. The likelihood of <br />future occurrence is considered moderate, with <br />the future impact high. <br />Lino Lakes experienced a Tornado in 1998. Five <br />homes were destroyed; many more homes had <br />roof damage, shingles missing, and siding fascia <br />blown away. Many large trees were destroyed <br />and debris and trees blocked roads. Many homes <br />were without electricity. The likelihood of future <br />occurrence is considered moderate and future <br />impact moderate. <br />Tornado Deaths <br />1950 -2002 <br />Source Nat rt..nate Oat. C6Ate, <br />Oak Grove experienced Tornados and straight -line winds in 1939, 1965 and 1997. The 1939 <br />tornado destroyed two homes and severely damaged several others. In 1965 there was minimal <br />damage. In1997 many, many trees down with some residential damage. The likelihood of <br />occurrence is that a possible tornado or FO winds will occur in the City of Oak Grove every <br />decade with the impact moderate. <br />A tornado touched down in Spring Lake Park on May 6, 1965: Two people were killed, hundreds <br />were injured and one -third of the property in Spring Lake Park was destroyed. School Districts <br />in Spring Lake Park and Fridley had estimated damage of $10 Million, public utilities were <br />seriously damaged, and 16,000 phones were out of service. Electric power and natural gas <br />service was interrupted for as long as a week. Spring Lake Park had 30% of its residencies <br />impacted. 149 homes totally destroyed and 147 homes were damaged. Neighboring community <br />medical facilities were taxed to maximum capacity. The likelihood of future occurrence is <br />moderate with the impact high. <br />There have been 25 tornado events that have impacted Anoka County and participating <br />jurisdictions since 1951. In some cases the same tornado may have impacted multiple <br />jurisdictions and was reported more than once. These tornado events resulted in 84 fatalities <br />and 672 injuries. The reported structure damage was $104,465,290 and content damage was <br />estimated to be $18,679,500. <br />Although tornadoes have affected Anoka County infrequently in the past, probability of damage <br />from this hazard in the future is likely. The entire county is at equal risk of future occurrences. <br />
