WS -2 WORK SESSION MEMORANDUM To: City Council From: Michael Grochala Date: June 4, 2007 Re: Work Session Item 2 Comprehensive Plan Update Draft Goals and Strategies PROJECT STATUS Since the March "Kickoff" meeting the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Panel has been working on the development of Goals and Strategies that will serve as the foundation of the planning process. The draft Goals and Strategies represent the work of the group over the past two months and are based on the 2030 Vision Plan accepted by the City Council in February. The panel has met four times over the past two months. The first meeting included an issues forum to identify the biggest issues facing the city and included a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) exercise. The second panel meeting centered on a group discussion over the results of the SWOT analysis. The panel discussed how future opportunities connect and /or conflict with one another i.e., job creation and housing. The panel identified the need for elements of the comprehensive plan to be mutually supporting. At the third panel meeting members were presented with a draft of the goals and strategies based on the 2030 vision plan and their previous discussions. The panel broke into small groups with each group reviewing all five topic areas; 1) Community, Residential and Neighborhood Development; 2) Economic and Commercial Development; 3) Community Amenities and Natural Resources; 4) Roads and Transportation; and 5) Community Facilities. The comments received from the advisory panel discussion were incorporated into the draft document. The draft was then submitted to the City's advisory 1
