from unreasonable fears about safety of persons and security of property; and suitable <br />for raising children. <br />1009.03 Pre - Existing Dwellings and Multiple Dwellings. <br />This Chapter establishes minimum standards for the initial and continued <br />occupancy of all buildings and does not replace or modify standards otherwise <br />established for the construction, repair, alteration, or use of building equipment or <br />facilities. <br />1009.04 Definitions. <br />Terms not defined in this Section shall be as defined in the Building Code or <br />Zoning Code. Further, terms not defined in this Section nor in the Building Code or <br />Zoning Code shall have the ordinary and accepted meanings as the context shall <br />require. The definitions in this Section shall apply when these words and phrases are <br />used in this Chapter. <br />Approved. As applied to a material, device, or method of construction as <br />approved by the Enforcement Officer under the provisions of this Chapter or approved <br />by another authority designated by law to give approval in the matter in question. <br />Basement. The portion of a building between floor and ceiling which is partly <br />below and partly above grade but so located that the vertical distance from grade to <br />floor below is less than the vertical distance from grade to ceiling. <br />Building Code. The State Building Code in its entirety as adopted by the city, <br />including any future amendments. <br />Cellar. The portion of a building between floor and ceiling which is wholly or <br />partly below grade and so located that the vertical distance from grade to floor below is <br />equal to or greater than the vertical distance from grade to ceiling. <br />Dwelling. Any building that contains one or two dwelling units used, intended, or <br />designed to be built, used, rented, leased, let or hired out to be occupied, or that are <br />occupied for living purposes. <br />Dwelling Unit. A single unit providing complete independent living facilities for <br />one or more persons, including permanent provisions for living, sleeping, eating, <br />cooking and sanitation. <br />Enforcement Officer. A representative of the City responsible for the <br />enforcement of the provisions of this Chapter. <br />Exterior Property Areas. Open space on the premises under the control of the <br />owners or operators of the premises. <br />2 <br />• <br />
