Figure 7 shows a four week old <br />chick that fell, was knocked, or blown from its nest. Mortality from unknown causes (Figure <br />8) was also evident. Sibling aggression is thought be the cause of death of a nine week old <br />chick at Pig's Eye Lake (Figure 9). Also, predation was not solely attributed to raccoons. <br />On May 26, 2004 while installing a second set of cameras at Peltier Island, a young Great <br />Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) was flushed from a nest. Examination of the nest contents <br />(Figure 10) confirmed that a family of Great Horned Owls had been preying upon the young <br />herons. Another owlet was spotted on June 8, 2004; again in the presence of depredated <br />Great Blue Herons (Figure 11). <br />8 <br />• <br />• <br />
