HISTORY
The Minnesota territorial legislature convened
in 1849 and organized the counties of
Washington, Ramsey and Benton. What is
now Anoka County was embraced in both
Ramsey and Benton Counties with the Rum
River as the dividing line.
In the early 1850's fur traders began to settle in
the area now known as Ramsey. As more
settlers came into the area, this thriving
community was given the name Anoka. The
name originated from the Indian Language,
meaning "on both sides" (of the Rum River).
In 1856, Sherburne County was detached from
Benton County. That territory, lying east of
Sherburne and west of the Rum River, was
also detached and became a part of Ramsey
County. By an act of the legislature, Anoka
County was formed from Ramsey County on
May 23, 1857. The original eight townships
were: Anoka, Watertown (Ramsey), Round
Lake (Andover), Bethel, Columbus, St. Francis,
Oak Grove, and Centerville.
A second county was formed the same day as
Anoka County and was named Manomin.
Manomin was abolished on November 2, 1869
and attached to Anoka County. Manomin kept
its' name until 1879 when it was changed to
Fridley.
You can come with your own tam and
wagon, hitch a ride on our wagon, bring
your own mount and help with traffic
controlorbe anouttider for awagon.
PURPOSE:
To conduct an authentic wagon train
through Anoka County for the purpose of
encouraging appreciation of our heritage
and history in celebrating our 150th year as
a County.
To encourage cooperation in historical
preservation and educate the people we
come in contact with.
To be as authentic as possible.
To practice land and trail stewardship.
To have a good time.
To create a sense of community around
the Sesquicentennial.
TYPICAL DAY:
RISE AND SHINE
RELOCA'T'E VEHICTJS
BEGAN THE DAY'S
DRIVE
NOON BREAK
ARRIVE AT CAMP
DAILY CAMP MEETING
CAMP FIRE
QUIET CAMP
COSTS:
6:30
8:00
9:00
12:00 -1:00
3:00 -3:30
6:00
6:00
9:30
COST WILL BE ABOUT $45 PER
PERSON FOR THE 6 DAYS.
COST FOR A DAY RIDER WILL
BE ABOUT $25.00.
