•
•
Presettlement Vegetation (Circa 1850)
According to vegetation data compiled from the Original Land Survey Notes of Minnesota (circa
1850), and mapped by F.J. Marschner (1975), the natural vegetation of The Preserve
Conservation Development and surrounding landscape at the time of European settlement was
comprised predominantly of oak openings and barrens (oak savanna/woodland) in the uplands,
and wet prairie within lower lying wetland areas extending north and south along the margins of
the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes. The pre - settlement vegetation of Anoka County was continually
affected by occasional to frequent wildfires during periods of drought. Less commonly, areas of
mesic hardwood forest ( "Big Woods ") were also in the vicinity of The Preserve site, typically
occurring in those portions of the landscape that wildfires could not penetrate (such as isolated
islands and large isolated topographic depressions; Figure 3).
Oak Barrens
Wet Prairie
Oak Barrens
The Preserve
Oak Barrens
Wet Prairie
Wet \
Prairie
ANOKA COUNTY
RAMSEY COUNTY
0.5 0 0.5 1 Miles
Wet Prairie
Figure 3.
