Nature's Refuge Development
Phase I Archaeological Survey and Architectural History Assessment
Page 6
3.0 LITERATURE SEARCH
3.1 PREVIOUS ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES
Research indicated that no archaeological surveys have been conducted within the project
area.
No sites have been recorded (confirmed), and no sites have been reported (not field
checked) within the current project area. One site had been recorded (confirmed), and no
sites have been reported (not field checked) within one mile of the project area (see Table
1).
In 1977, an artifact scatter (21AN110) was identified. This site is located on a blow -out
on a high, level area northwest of George Watch Lake. A surface inspection was
conducted in the blow -out area and no shovel tests were excavated at the site. Three
flakes were recovered from 21AN110, two chert and one quartzite. No ceramics were
recovered. (Minnesota Archaeological Site File, 21AN110, on file at the SHPO).
TABLE 1. The housing development
will be constructed in a low - lying, relatively flat wooded area adjacent to a wetland.
Geologically, the project area lies within the Anoka Sand Plain, Undulating geomorphic
region. The project area is situated within the SSPL soil landscape unit, described as
sandy over sandy, poorly drained, light colored soils. The SSPL soil landscape unit
makes up approximately two percent of the Anoka Sand Plain, Undulating geomorphic
region (Agricultural Experiment Station 1977).
