•
Memorandum
DATE: April 4, 2008
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: James E. Studenski, City Engineer
RE: Friday Update — Rain Sensor Retro -fit Program
Background
S414,6-64L1, W(14-14 e
L c ,., 4 - q -o g
As a follow -up to previous discussions with the City Council regarding a rain sensor
retro -fit program, staff has been in contact with representatives of MTI distributing and
their parent The Toro Company. MTI Distributing and the Toro Company are offering a
partnership with the City of Lino Lakes to purchase wireless rain sensors at a discounted
rate. Currently the list price for the wireless rain sensor being offered is approximately
$117 per unit. This partnership will allow the City to purchase the wireless rain sensors
for $50 per unit. The only requirements of the partnership are that the City of Lino
Lakes purchases a minimum of 100 rain sensor units, not to exceed 500 rain sensor
units in 2008.
An example of city participation, in 2007 the City of Woodbury purchased 200 rain
sensors units and provided those rain sensors at no charge to single - family residential
property owners. The property owner was responsible for the installation and any
associated costs. The first year of the program was such a success for the City of
Woodbury; they will be purchasing additional rain sensors for distribution in 2008.
The rain sensor units being offered work with any automatic sprinkler system controller
and are user friendly to install and operate. MTI Distributing and the Toro Company do
not provide installation assistance, but have offered to hold an informational meeting at
City Hall, providing installation and operation tips for residents.
The Toro Rain Sensor features:
Quick-Clip TM Gutter Bracket Mounts Easily
No Special Tools Required
Multi- functional Receiver
• 3 Easy Set -up Water Conservation Modes
• Bar Graph Signal Strength and Battery Strength Indicators
• Smart Bypass With Additional Rain Delay Functionality
