MEMORANDUM
DATE: December 11, 2008
TO: City Council
FROM: Michael Grochala, Community Development Director
RE: I -35W /Main Street Interchange
Response to Mr. Landsberger comments
At the December 1, 2008 City Council work session staff presented an overview of future
improvements and planning for the extension of Main Street and additional interchange
locations onto I -35W. Staff indicated that no interchange is currently planned or
proposed to be constructed at the intersection of Main Street (CSAH 14) and I -35W.
Mr. James Landsberger, 7849 Main Street, questioned the information provided and
stated that Anoka County was prepared to construct the bridge circa 1998 -2000. He
stated that the county had the funding in place to construct the bridge but terminated the
project due to City opposition.
The council requested staff contact Anoka County regarding the history of the
interchange in question.
I received a response from both Doug Fischer, County Engineer, and Jon Olson, County
Public Services Manager. Both Doug and Jon concurred that the interchange was
indicated on old plans and that it was removed from plans due to City opposition. The
County did not have funding to construct the interchange. Mr. Olson noted that the same
subject came up at a Metro North Chamber Government relations meeting and he
provided the same answer.
J: \correspondence \City Councill35W -Main St interchange 12- 11- 08.dot
