Memorandum
To: City Council
From: Julie Bartell, City Clerk
Date: August 7, 2009
Re: Proposed charter amendment re televising council meetings
After the discussion with the council and charter commission last Monday evening,
the city attorney prepared the following suggested language for the proposed charter
amendment:
All regular Council meetings, as well as any comments received during a
scheduled public comment period immediately prior to such meetings, shall
be televised. Should the Council determine that it is necessary to exempt a
meeting from this requirement, it may do so by motion.
This language was forwarded to the charter commission and at their meeting last
night, they voted to keep the charter amendment as originally written by the
commission. That language is as follows:
All regular open council meetings, the Open Mike portion, and council work
sessions shall be televised. Should the City Council determine it is necessary to
exempt a given council meeting or council work session from this procedure,
they may do so by motion.
Therefore the notice for the public hearing (containing the text of the amendment)
will be published with the original language.
The public hearing is being noticed as a special council meeting on September 8,
2009, 5:30 p.m. (previous to the work session that evening). Please ensure that this
meeting is on your schedule.
