As you know our Great Blue Herons were almost eradicated from
their nesting area on Peltier Island. At one time the Peltier island heron Rookery was the second
largest rookery in the metropolitan area. A large contributor to the loss was raccoon predation.
Your money will be used to protect the heron nesting from raccoons by purchacing flashing that
will prevent the raccoons from climbing into the nest trees. The money may also be used to
restore and or protect nesting habitat by replacing wind destroyed nesting trees or possibly
treating Black Ash from emerald ash borer that the Herons are nesting in. About a third of the
trees that the herons nest in are Black Ash.
The heron is a very important cultural element to the City of Lino Lakes in that the Heron is our
City symbol. We have the heron on our stationary, our water towers, on light poles, in our city
council chamber, on the weather vane on top of city hall. We have Blue heron Elementary and
Blue Heron Days. The Herons are enjoyed by residents of both the City of Lino Lakes and the
City of Blaine in ponds behind houses and wading on the shores of our lakes.
Again thank you for your very generous donation. We will update you on the heron status in the
years to follow.
Sincerely,
Marty Asleson
Environmental Coordinator
City of Lino Lakes
