Open for one day the warm weather continued and we didn't open for good until
January 10th. This was the second year in a row we were not open over the school holiday break which
was unfortunate. Once we were up and running the skating season was overall very strong. We never
had to close due to warm weather or poor ice conditions. A few days in early February we shut down the
warming houses early due to the extreme cold temperatures and wind chills.
During last skating season a number of Centennial Youth Hockey Association (CYHA) coaches helped
after hours sweeping and flooding at Birch and Sunrise Parks. That program was a success and was
expected to continue this season. With the late opening date and the need for the City's staff to flood over
a few weekends the CYHA coaches flooding program never materialized this year. This is something
that I would expect to start up again next year especially if we can open up the rinks in December.
The big improvement of the season was the new siding, painting, and new windows installed at City Hall
Park. The new windows were especially appreciated because of the new placement which enabled the
warming house attendant to be able to view what was taking place on the rink without going outside. Our
park maintenance staff also painted new red and blue lines on all the boards which dressed up the rinks as
well.
There were two accident reports turned in during the 2006 -07 season and both came from Sunrise Park.
Neither of the injuries were serious as one child hit his head on another participants skate and the other
was a adult falling and hitting his head on the ice. The last two years we have had very good luck
keeping the injuries down and the participants safe while skating.
City Hall was open again on a limited basis this season; Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. Overall City Hall had some pretty decent use and seemed to be a great option on that side of
town. Sunrise Park was again the busiest site we had with regularly having 40 -50 participants skating at
any one time. Birch Park overall was very quiet this year and the traffic through the warming house was
much slower than in years past. Next year Birch Park will most likely be going through a renovation
similar to what happened at City Hall Park this year so a few changes are on the horizon.
To recap this year we opened late but once we were open the conditions were outstanding!
CC: Lino Lakes Park Board
BH/warminghouse2005/ 2005- 06finalwarminghousereport.doc
