Last month I joked that we would have skatable ice by December 8. I wasn't off by much; I believe we opened shelters on December 15. That's the earliest I can remember in the last 10, maybe 15 years. Maintenance activities during December have included: ■ Rink repairs — replace broken rink boards, repair gates, fencing, and lights. ■ Warming house maintenance — clean shelters, check benches, and replace light bulbs. ■ Hockey goal repair — weld broken goals, mend holes in nets, and re -lace. • Rink maintenance — daily maintenance of four hockey and three general skating rinks. Rinks are swept to the boards, if there are minimal sweepings, if there are large amounts of sweepings we run a snow blower around the boards, sweep the perimeter, then hand shovel the boards. Once the surface has been cleaned we apply water, usually with our tanker by nozzling on a thin layer. Occasionally we will use the dump valve to apply a thicker layer of water. If our tanker is not available we use 1 Y2" fire hose run off of hydrants (Sunrise and Birch) or a well at City Hall. • Equipment maintenance as needed. • Snow removal and cleanup of city streets, intersections, cul -de -sacs, city trails and parking lots. • Marshan Park — fabricated and painted two wide shelving units (one approx. 12' and one approx. 8') for use in storage building.
