•
(MLCCS) and how much of Lino Lakes will be done. Meredith will develop a proposed system
for rating the quality of habitats as part of the MLCCS mapping.
Lino Lakes
Meredith Cornett reported that Lino Lakes is currently having a consultant develop a tree
preservation ordinance and a landscaping ordinance. She coordinated with Hannah Dunevitz and
various Forestry staff in reviewing drafts and providing input. Meredith, Peggy, and Kris Larson
(Minnesota Land Trust) met with Lino's planner Jeff Smyser and environmental staff Marty
Asleson to discuss the city's preservation development process and how we may collaborate on a
subdivision plan which would incorporate conservation easements and an natural resource
management plan.
Primary Activities & Products of Project/Work Assignments
Peggy walked the group through a simplified 4/19/00 version of the "Primary Activities &
Products of Project/Schedule" which organizes DNR's work on the WUI LUG project into 6
primary activities. Samantha Hayes provided directions to the group on filling out a "Work
Assignment Matrix" and then each person signed up for which of the 6 primary activities for
which city they will work on. The group briefly discussed the results and gaps, including the
need for overall coordinators for each topic /activity. (See attached results of sign -up - including
a few suggestions in brackets for suggested people who were not in attendance. Peggy will
check with Sharon, Suzann, and Bart; Marty Asleson will check with Lino Lake's park staff Rick
D.)
Information Swap
The group discussed various publications that will be useful in this project. Anoka County has a
natural resource management plan for their park lands. Dan C. will get DNR a copy of Hugo's
Comprehensive Plan and amendments. Meredith brought up a number of good natural resource
inventory and management planning documents, including from Cottage Grove, Burnsville,
Woodbury, Belle Plaine, etc. Joan mentioned the "Planning for Birds" booklet. Peggy
mentioned Biko's sustainable development model ordinances. Kate mentioned the watershed
district's guide to surface water. Also mentioned were an article on management in Restoration
Ecology and reference manuals put together by the Center for Watershed Management. Meredith
offered to develop a matrix which we can use to list useful documents with the expectation that
other work group members will contribute information to the matrix on other useful documents.
Duane Shodeen suggested that throughout this project we keep track of the barriers and problems
we face in the process.
Wrap - Up/Next Steps
The next WUI LUG work group meeting was set for Thursday, May 25, 1 -3:30 pm in the Metro
Region Conference Room. At the May meeting, work group members will be expected to report
on progress they are making on the primary activities they working on - with emphasis on
developing checklists and making significant progress on the various natural resource
assessments. Meeting participants completed meeting evaluation forms.
