and integrate the best information available and package it to be most useful to these landowners. (Including
coordinating with the comparable trout stream watershed guidebook also under_ development.) This may include
addressing conflicts between guidance given by different programs with different goals.
The preliminary concept is that the guidebook will:
• be about 30 pages long;
• be both printed as a paperback booklet and placed
on the DNR web page (with hot links to other
information and resources);
• consist of a series of fact sheets on different
natural resource topics (see last page);
• have limited narrative, but rather be primarily
checklists, helpful hints, bulleted points, photo's
and illustrations;
• be specifically geared to Minnesota landscapes
and natural resource issues.
Landowner Guidebook Work Group
Within the general parameters of the Forest Service grant, the specific content and style of the guidebook will be
determined by a interdisciplinary workgroup. In addition, some agency staff may be involved as "consultants" to
the project - contributing information and/or reviewing drafts rather than being work group members. (Note:
"consultants" in this case means staff who are providing input into the project, not people who are hired or
receive special funds to participate.)
The work group includes representatives of:
within the DNR
• Division of Forestry - Metro Region (Public
Affairs, Forest Ecology, Forest Health,
Cooperative Forest Management specialists)
• Division of Forestry - Central Office (Fire
Prevention specialist),
• Division of Forestry - other regions (Cambridge
& Pequot Lakes Areas),
• other Metro Region DNR staff (Division of
Waters, Section of Wildlife, Aquatic Plant
Restoration project, Trout Stream Watershed
Initiative, etc.), and
• DNR Information Center.
outside of the DNR
• Minnesota Extension Service
• Washington County Extension Office,
• Natural Resource Conservation Service,
• Anoka County SWCD,
• Board of Water and Soil Resources,
• Metropolitan Council,
• Minnesota Pollution Control Agency,
• Sherburne County Tree Board
• East Cental Woodland Council and Minnesota
Forestry Association,
• USDA Forest Service,
• Tree Trust, and
• consulting forester.
The primary duties of the work group are to:
• determine topics and basic organization of the guidebook,
• refine the geographic and audience focus of the guidebook (as needed),
• contribute ideas for content (including finding examples of similar existing materials),
• review and approve the basic content,
• provide direction to the professional writer and illustrator, and
• develop strategies for distributing the guidebook and promoting its use in various programs and events.
In addition, work group members will review and approve the text, illustrations, and layout.
The work group is expected to meet about 5 times (from March through September 2000). From then through
May 2001 (when the guidebook goes to the printer), the work group may choose to meet as a whole or in part or
to otherwise provide review and comment and approval to the guidebook content.
2
•
