The community just built a brand new community center and fire station. The 4 -H'ers plan to <br />ap.htm develop a park and to landscape around the community center, plant trees at the park site and around <br />the square. 4 -H member Amanda Goodson said, "This is a way for our club to say thank you to the <br />community and play an important role in the community center project." <br />ARIZONA <br />Mohave County Leaders' Council Contact: Angie Wilks <br />Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (520)565 -3488 <br />The Mohave County 4 -H Clubs will contact and organize other youth and civic groups to gain their <br />support for the tree planting project. Groups will meet with Mohave County Fair Association, Mohave <br />County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners, and the National Resource Conservation Service to <br />develop plant selection guidelines and design an irrigation system. Workshops will be conducted to train <br />youth and adults on planting techniques and irrigation installation methods. 4 -H Clubs will solicit <br />community support for the project though the Adopt -A -Tree program. Individuals or businesses can <br />make donations to help fund the purchase of trees. 3000 feet of tree line will be planted utilizing a mix of <br />evergreen and deciduous varieties of Afghan Pine, Eucalyptus, Arizona Ash, each spaced on 10' center; <br />for a total of 300, five gallon container trees. <br />COLORADO <br />Avon Elementary School Tree Planting Project Contact: Susan Mackin Dolan <br />Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (970)926 -8056 <br />Avon Elementary School in Avon, Colorado is working on a habitat enhancement project to provide <br />outdoor classroom areas for environmental education and to complete the Audubon Cooperative <br />Sanctuary Program that helps schools become more environmentally friendly. The first half of the <br />planting was completed in the spring of 1999 by 80 third graders and the second half will be completed <br />by a new class of third graders (with the help of the fourth graders) in the fall of 1999. The Town of Avon <br />and local businesses donated laborers and equipment to help the school with the plantings. <br />"On a sunny day in May, 80 hard working third graders along with their parents and teachers and a town <br />crew planted fruit trees, shrubs, and a wildflower garden at Avon Elementary School. The excitement <br />and enthusiasm was contagious and the result was a beautiful new outdoor classroom area. We look <br />forward to completing this planting in the fall." <br />Sedgwick County 4 -H Council Contact: Gary K. Lancaster <br />Grant Award: $720 Phone: (970)474 -3479 <br />Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Office, Sedgwick County will partner with the Sedgwicl <br />County 4 -H Council to carry out this project. Our objective is to strategically plant shade trees at the <br />County Fairgrounds. Due to the time of year, Hackberry and /or Honeylocust trees will be purchased, but <br />left in their pots. The potted tress will be carefully managed during the remainder of the summer. In the <br />fall, upon dormancy, the trees will be planted in the desired location. These two types of trees will providE <br />very nice shade as well as help beautify the grounds. "I strongly support the community tree - planting at <br />the Sedgwick County Fairgrounds. Poncha Springs is billed as Crossroads of the Rockies. These trees will be planted in memory <br />of the Columbine students and teacher who were killed in the spring.
