Developers, by reducing initial
development costs with features such as
smaller stormwater pipe and lower
stormwater basin costs.
Everyone, by providing better quality
water in our lakes and streams.
How PRESERVING INFILTRATION WORKS
FOR You
• Mimics natural lath cape
• Reduces runaffvolume and flooding
• Slows runoff so it does not pick up pollutants
• Decreases cost of streets
• Decreases maintenance costs
• Can reduce storm sewer costs
WATERSHED DISTRICT GOALS
The soils in the northern half of the watershed
are especially conducive to infiltration. We
want to use this capability to the advantage of
all.
The philosophy of the Rice Creek Watershed
District regarding runoff volume management
is.
• Erg minimize the creation of impervious
surfaces to limit runoff from happening in
the first place, and
• Second; maximize infiltration of runoff
that must occur.
The first philosophy is addressed by council
and township - officials and the . second by
municipal and development designers.
District rules and regulations regarding
stormwater runoff and infiltration tration can
be found in the companion document,
Stormwater Infiltration Guidance.
By limiting the loss of pervious surfaces,
through practices such as narrower streets,
municipalities gain several advantages.
Reduced construction costs (less
materials and preparation needed).
• Reduced maintenance costs (less area).
• Reduced mature tree loss associated with
narrower streets and smaller parking
spaces. Less mature tree loss helps
create an enhanced community
environment.
*1 Traffic calming/reduced speeds for more
pedestrian friendly neighborhoods.
Desirable: Narrower streets mean smaller
ponds, lower _ construction cost, and lower
long -term maintenance costs.
Undesirable: Are 32 -foot wide streets
necessary on a two-block long street?
•
