• Draft 5/22/00 Site Based Management Plan Checklist for Natural Areas Adapted by Meredith Cornett from Allman, L. 1997. Natural Areas: Protecting a Vital Community Asset. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) ❑ Purpose— Does the plan contain a clear purpose and identify the management goals near the beginning of the document? ❑ Authority/Responsibility— For lands under the jurisdiction of the plan, does the document identify under what authority (e.g., city policy, ordinance, etc.) the LUG has the responsibility for management, and what department is responsible for overseeing the management (e.g., Parks and Recreation, Forestry, etc.)? ❑ Summary— Does the plan contain a summary (two pages or less) identifying management goals, general strategies and tools to be used, partners, etc.? ❑ Property report— Does the plan contain a property report? ❑ Legal description or map is included of lands subject to the plan. ❑ e.g., Current land uses are described. ❑ e.g., Ownership is documented. ❑ Resource inventory— Have the current natural features been assessed comprehensively as appropriate to the situation? Are clear maps presented for these features? ❑ e.g., significant landforms ❑ e.g., bedrock and surficial geology ❑ e.g., soil types ❑ e.g., hydrology & water quality /character ❑ e.g., land cover has been described using the Minnesota Land Cover Classification System ❑ e.g., natural communities (using Minnesota County Biological Survey (MCBS) data, additional survey data, and MCBS terminology) ❑ e.g., rare species occurrences ❑ e.g., other native plant and animal species ❑ Historical context— Has the historical context of the project been provided? ❑ e.g., Have literature searches and/or personal interviews been conducted to assemble information on the site's natural history? ❑ e.g., Have presettlement surveys, pollen studies, historical photos and/or other available resources been used to understand the distribution of historical natural communities and disturbance patterns across the site? ❑ e.g., Has the site's land use history been documented?
