D. <br />In your school or community <br />Even if you don't have a backyard of your own, there <br />are many opportunities to use the practices in this <br />book to contribute to a healthy environment. <br />Backyard ponds, wetlands, native grass plantings, and plants <br />that attract wildlife can improve school grounds, areas around <br />apartments and businesses, community gardens, parks, and <br />other community areas. <br />Consider starting a backyard conservation project in your <br />community. Any vacant lot or unused space is a candidate for <br />improvement with natural plantings. A community garden can <br />be a source of pride as well as a source of food. A garden also <br />can be a hands -on teaching center for natural resource conser- <br />vation concepts: <br />Businesses often sponsor community improvement projects in <br />cooperation with schools and civic organizations, which con- <br />tribute labor. <br />26 <br />
