• ENVIRONMENTAL BOARD
•
•
2000 GOALS
1. Work with City staff and consultants to complete the Natural Resources Inventory and
management plan process. Work with Council, staff and other boards to disseminate this
information to the community and educate the community about its application and
importance. Identify potential areas of controversy and discuss these with City staff, City
Council, and stakeholders as needed. The intent of these discussions is to translate the
recommendations in our Environmental Planning Handbook into a workable policy that is
reflected in our City ordinances.
2. Utilize data in the ecological inventory to formulate a recommendation for a "green
infrastructure" in the City. The product would attempt to incorporate the City's lakes,
wetlands, and other high - quality areas into a continuous network of open spaces that, would
preserve the ecological health of these areas and maintain vital wildlife corridors. This
proposal is intended to be a starting point for future discussions with all interested parties that
should eventually result in the adoption of an open space plan for the City.
3. Prepare a set of standard recommendations on the environmental issues that are common to
all development projects, and discuss these recommendations with City staff. Issues to be
considered might include lighting, use of native vegetation, buffers, stormwater management,
impervious surface, soil treatments, tree preservation, and open space issues.
4. In collaboration with City staff, devise a standard form for use by the Environmental Board
to evaluate development projects. The form should incorporate the issues identified in goal
number three (above). The intent of this form is to clearly communicate our priorities to
developers, streamline our evaluation procedures, and to provide a format for clear
communication with staff, P & Z and Council.
5. Encourage City Council and City staff to continue the process of educating developers on
"conservation development" issues. Participate in discussions aimed at establishing
standards and guidelines related to environmental issues. Encourage council and staff to hold
periodic Developers Forums to communicate with developers and convey information about
City objectives including environmental objectives.
6. Identify at least one environmental restoration project that requires participation of nearby
residents and begin planning the project. This will require recruiting and education citizen
volunteers and pursuing funding. The intent is to increase citizen ownership of the City's
environmental vision and to provide a demonstration of the appeal of effective environmental
practices.
7. Seek opportunities for continued education of the Environmental Board.
8. Continue efforts aimed at public education and awareness on environmental issues. Update
and revise citizen packets. Encourage participation by schools and private landowners in
wildlife habitat programs. Educate residents on issues of good land stewardship.
