• Agenda Item 6C
•
•
Environmental Board Meeting Date: February 27, 2002
Topic: Earth Day
Summary: Earth Day is scheduled for April 20, 2002. This is the 14th year that the
City has sponsored an Earth Day Celebration. For the last several years the City of
Lino Lakes has worked together with the Cities of Lexington, Circle Pines and
Centerville in what has become the Quad Cities Earth Day Celebration.
There has been one meeting to date from the Organizational Committee. The next
meeting is scheduled for March 12, 6:00 PM at Circle Pines City Hall. The theme this
year is 'What's in Your Back Yard ? ". We are looking for issues that focus on
environmental issues that can be looked at on a back yard focus. For instance,
people often times might see Egrets or Herons in the lakes or ponds on or around
their properties. We know that residents for the most part see the birds but do not
have an understanding of habitat, or the unique resources that people have in their
back yards. One idea is to have small prairie - starter kits that folks can take home
with them to start a small native planting in their back yards.
One big coordination issue that I need help with is volunteers. I need someone that
has intemet that can take calls and coordinate with me on projects scheduling and
phone calling. I do have some projects in mind besides the usual cleanup types of
activities. We have two restoration projects lined up for this spring. The city could
prepare the sites and have volunteers seed the areas.
I think the Environmental Board should focus on the education thing of backyards,
especially with the Herons. Anoka County is gathering some "touch and feel" things.
I have talked to Jeff Perry from Anoka County about tying in the local education issue
with our Environmental Board. Please come with Ideas.
Attachments: None
