•
-Nuirmilu-
Marty Asleson
From: Paul Nelson
Sent: Friday, June 14, 2002 10:25 AM
To: Steve.Kittelson @dnr.state.mn.us
Subject: Subject: Re: Blanding's turtle
Hello Steve,
My turtle sighting was on County Road J, just west of the first house that is about 200 yards west of the
Shadow Ridge Driving Range. The Driving range is about a half mile west of Centerville Road. There is a large
swamp / wetlands the borders the north side of the driving range and that first house property.
I saw it at about 7:30 Sunday 6/9. It was on the shoulder, facing starting to cross the road going south towards
North Oaks, obviously an upscale turtle. I help a lot of turtles across the road. When I first saw it as I was
driving, I thought it was a snapper because of the size. As I pulled over I noticed the bright yellow throat. This
turtle had a brown smooth shell like a painted turtle, but was as big in diameter as football, much larger than any
painted turtle I've ever seen. It shell was at least twice as thick from belly to top and more elongated than a
painted turtle shell.
Paul K. Nelson
Regional Sales Manager
The Specialty Mfg. Please send the
date, specific location, why you thought it was a Blanding's, etc. I will
enter it into our database. The database is used to guide construction and
other projects to minimize impacts on the turtles.
Please include your initial correspondence below in your response.
Thanks for the report,
Steve Kittelson
Nongame Wildlife Specialist
MN DNR
»> "Paul K. I knew it wasn't a snapper or painted. I thought it
was somebodys pet that had escaped but it seemed to be healthy, so I watched
6/17/02
