•
abandonded nesting for the last three years. The Cities of Lino Lakes and
Centerville have reacted to this issue by jointly adopting joint powers and
ordinances controlling use around Peltier Island in Lake Peltier where the birds
nest. A Task Force consisting of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
Wild Life Managers, The Rice Creek Watershed District's Biologist, Local wildlife
experts and advocates, have met several times to determine the cause of
abandonment. A University of Minnesota Student has just been hired to help
with this issue. The Heron is our City Symbol, and a new ellementary school has
just been named Great Blue Heron Ellenentary. Our public education, and our
research and monitering efforts concerning the Herons would greatly enhanced if
we had a web cam that could moniter the birds behavior. There are also three
nesting eagles in this area that could be monitered. The City also has several
osprey nesting sites.
Current And Planned Activities
Described in Background and Geographic Focus Areas to some extent. Our
Environmental Board meets on a monthly basis. One of the responsibilities of
the Environmental Board is to review new proposals for development that are
applied for. Recommendations from the Environmental Board are forwarded on
to the Lino Lakes Planning and Zonning Board and the City Council . The
Environmental Board is also responsible for Environmental Education, and
natural resource planning and management, and as a public contact/involvement
facilitation mechanism.
Public Involvement
The City of Lino Lakes Environmental Board has a history of promoting public
involvement. The Board has a monthly public meeting. The board has in the
past used a very limited education budget to assemble information packets for
new residents, and to publish articles in the City News Letter. With your help, the
City Environmental Board would be able to promote, educate, inform, and
thereby involve the public in a very substantial way.
Current Public Education
As stated above the City Environmental Board has assembled information
packets, writes City News Letter Articles, participates in a yearly Quad City Earth
Day Celebration, and holds a monthly public meeting. With the critical decisions
the City will be making in the future, and with the Cultural issues that surface
from the potential loss of unique natural resources, the Lino Lakes Environmental
Board is looking for education tools that can adequatly address the public's need
for information.
Please mail proposals to:
