1
i
MANAGEMENT SUMMARY
Mr. Ed Vaughan, a local land developer, is exploring a plan to build residential housing on a 10 -acre parcel near the
City of Centerville, Anoka County, Minnesota. It is located in the SW '/ of the NW % of the NW '/, of Section 27,
T3 IN R22W (Figures 1 and 2). The property is a small island, surrounded by marsh, located approximately 700 feet
south of Wards Lake and 500 feet east of a peninsula of land which has already been developed with single family
housing. It is privately owned but in anticipation of federal permitting requirements, Mr. Vaughan contracted with
Loucks Associates to conduct a Phase I cultural resources survey of the property. Loucks archaeologists Teresa
Halloran and David Mather carried out the survey in November 2000.
No known or previously unrecorded archaeological sites were located within the APE. Loucks Associates therefore
recommends that the proposed development of this property be allowed to proceed as planned with the following
qualifications:
1) Archaeological field testing was performed only in those areas defined by the APE. If it becomes
necessary to expand beyond these limits, additional archaeological testing may be required.
2) Although no evidence of archaeological sites were identified during the survey, archaeological sites
have been identified in the greater vicinity of the project area. There remains some potential for sites without
surface evidence to be present within the project area. If it is suspected that human remains or a burial area is
encountered during construction operations, activity in the immediate area must cease and the Anoka County
Sheriffs Office, the State Archaeologist and the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council should be contacted for further
assistance. Minnesota Statutes Chapter 307.08 prohibits the intentional disturbance of human burials.
