Environmental Protection Guidelines ek <br />Forster's Tern (Sterna forsteri) <br />Conservation Status: The Forster's Tern is listed as a species of special concern on Minnesota Depart- <br />ment of Natural Resources list of Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern Species because of its <br />highly specific habitat requirements. This unique bird has been sighted in the Marshan Lake area. <br />Description: <br />• Size: 13-14 in <br />• A medium -sized tern. <br />• White with black cap. <br />• Tail long and deeply forked. <br />• Wings very white in most plumages. <br />• Legs orange and relatively long. <br />Habitat Breeds in marshes, generally with lots of calm, open water and large stands of island -like vege- <br />tation. Winters in marshes, coastal beaches, lakes, and rivers. <br />Nest Type: Varies from scrape in mud or sand, to elaborate raft of floating vegetation, or on top of a <br />muskrat lodge. Typically placed in clumps of marsh vegetation close to calm open water. <br />Food: Small fish and arthropods. <br />Sound: Common call a descending "kerrr."
