AGENDA ITEM 6A
STAFF MEMBER Daniel Tesch, Assistant City Administrator
DATE 4 March 1998
SUBJECT The City of Lino Lakes and Public Utilities Commission
Order that:Axea bode Splits Follow Municipal Borders
BACKGROUND
It is anticipated that by January, 1 12 area code will have exhausted its supply of
available telephone numbers. This has been brought on by the recent increase in requests
for numbers by business, cell - phone and fax users. On 13 November, 1997, the
Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) issued an Order dictating that any area
code split follow municipal boundaries. U S West has recently filed a petition with the
PUC stating that given the 1 ,January, 1999 deadline, they will be unable to make the
technical changes necessary to follow that order. In other words, cities such as
Shoreview, Limo Lakes and New Brighton to the North, and Eagan, Apple Valley,
Rosemount, Lakeville and Farmington to the South would be divided, with some
residents staying within the 612 area code and some residents being assigned the new
651 area code.
Please find
municipal'
Resolution 98 -36 which supports the PUC's original order to follow
s when arcs codes.
The idea of Lino Lakes having two area codes goes against every mission and directive of
the city council, wti has been to establish an identity for the community. The City has
until March 11 to comment on this issue.
OPTIONS
1 Pass Resolution 98 -36, which urges the PUC to stand behind their original Order,
and require area code splits follow municipal boundaries. This resolution would
be forwarded to the PUC along with a letter stating our preference to stay within
the 612 area code, as well as our suggestion that U S West be given a period of up
to six months to make the technical changes necessary to keep Lino Lakes in
one area code.
