AGENDA ITEM 6A <br />STAFF MEMBER Daniel Tesch, Assistant City Administrator <br />DATE 4 March 1998 <br />SUBJECT The City of Lino Lakes and Public Utilities Commission <br />Order that:Axea bode Splits Follow Municipal Borders <br />BACKGROUND <br />It is anticipated that by January, 1 12 area code will have exhausted its supply of <br />available telephone numbers. This has been brought on by the recent increase in requests <br />for numbers by business, cell - phone and fax users. On 13 November, 1997, the <br />Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) issued an Order dictating that any area <br />code split follow municipal boundaries. U S West has recently filed a petition with the <br />PUC stating that given the 1 ,January, 1999 deadline, they will be unable to make the <br />technical changes necessary to follow that order. In other words, cities such as <br />Shoreview, Limo Lakes and New Brighton to the North, and Eagan, Apple Valley, <br />Rosemount, Lakeville and Farmington to the South would be divided, with some <br />residents staying within the 612 area code and some residents being assigned the new <br />651 area code. <br />Please find <br />municipal' <br />Resolution 98 -36 which supports the PUC's original order to follow <br />s when arcs codes. <br />The idea of Lino Lakes having two area codes goes against every mission and directive of <br />the city council, wti has been to establish an identity for the community. The City has <br />until March 11 to comment on this issue. <br />OPTIONS <br />1 Pass Resolution 98 -36, which urges the PUC to stand behind their original Order, <br />and require area code splits follow municipal boundaries. This resolution would <br />be forwarded to the PUC along with a letter stating our preference to stay within <br />the 612 area code, as well as our suggestion that U S West be given a period of up <br />to six months to make the technical changes necessary to keep Lino Lakes in <br />one area code. <br />
