AGENDA ITEM 5D
STAFF ORIGINATOR: David Ahrens, Public Works Director /City Engineer
DATE: March 23, 1998
TOPIC Resolution No 98-40, Accept Bids and Award Construction
Contract - Lilac Street Utility Construction
INTRODUCTION:
Sealed bids were received and opened on Tuesday, March 17, 1998, for the
Lilac Street Utility Project. City Council action is required to award a construction
contract to the lowest responsible bidder.
BACKGROUND:
Council approved the plans and specifications for this project on February 23,
1998. On March 17, 1998, twelve sealed bids were received and opened with
the following results:
Company Bid Amount
S. R. Weidema $203,082.55
Kober Excavating $212,991.37
Forest Lake Contracting, Inc. $216,926.50
Kadlec Excavating $222,344.25
Brown & Cris, Inc. $226,146.13
Dave Perkins Contracting, Inc. $227,709.00
Penn Contracting, Inc. $228,523.00
Northdale Construction $231,729.00
Ryan Contracting $235,201.20
Burschville Construction $251,474.80
Widmer, Inc. $305,650.00
Hydrocon, Inc. $311,313.60
Engineer's estimate $209,905.75
The bids were tabulated and two small errors were found. The errors did not
change the order of the bid results. The twelve bids submitted represents a
competitive bidding environment that typically exists at this time of year. The low
bid by S. R. Weidema, Inc. is approximately 3% below the engineer's estimate.
The attached letter from the City's consulting engineer, TKDA, Inc., recommends
the award of the construction contract to S. R. Weidema, Inc.
